A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
In 1951, in respond to a Navy Air Corps requirement, Bausch & Lomb began developing a truly neutral sunglass lens, the N-15. This lens was reformulated slightly to make it more suitable for prescription used and rename the G-15. The military services were so impressed and they wrote a complete set of specifications around the characteristics of the G-15 lens.
Even though the services were eminently satisfied, Bausch & Lomb were concern about the public's acceptance of this lens. With an absorption of 85%, the G-15 was significantly darker than the sunglass lenses of that area. Bausch & Lomb feared that people would not accept sunglasses that masked their eyes.
Our concern were unwarranted. Ray ban G-15 sunglasses were more than just accepted by public. Almost immediately, from its introduction into the Ray-ban line in 1953, the G-15 become the most popular Ray-ban lens and created a new public perception of sunglasses. Sunglasses were not longer seen as just a beach accessory or fashion item, they were now perceived as serious protection devices. It wasn't long before most serious sunglasses were a good deal darker.
